Best Medical Therapy (BMT)

All patients with atherosclerotic disease ('hardening of the arteries') should be considered for Best Medical Therapy (BMT) which comprises:

  • Complete and permanent cessation of smoking. For help and advice visit http://smokefree.nhs.uk/

  • Regular exercise (e.g. 30 minutes of walking each day)

  • Weight control

  • Anti-platelet agent (e.g. Aspirin 75mg or Clopidogrel 75mg daily)

  • Lipid lowering therapy - usually achieved with a statin (e.g. Simvastatin 40mg daily at night).

  • Diagnosis and treatment of high blood pressure

  • Diagnosis and treatment of diabetes

Many patients, once they are established on BMT, need no further specific treatment.

However, if symptoms persist then patients may benefit from further investigations and one or more so-called adjuvant treatments such as

  • Exercise therapy

  • Cilostazol

  • Angioplasty

  • Surgery
